Jeanette Helen McCarty
This photo was taken in the early-mid 1940’s in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. She was either 16 or 17 when this photo was taken, and is now 85 years old.
I’ve always been in love with photography and fashion. The ‘What’s Old is New’ Project is an idea that I thought of while scanning an interesting series of older photographers for a customer at work. I spent an hour swooning over the hair and the clothing as well as the interesting composition of the photographs. I found myself desperately wanting to recreate these scenes and live them for myself as well as for others to view and enjoy.
Over the past few weeks I’ve been collecting older, more interesting photographs that I find primarily in antique shops and thrift stores. I’ve also gathered up old family photographs from my own family albums and have been getting as much information about the photos that I possibly can. Sadly the ones in antique shops and thrift stores will usually only have a faded, handwritten name on the back—or if I’m lucky the year of when the photo was taken.
From this collection that I’m gathering I want to scan the photos and recreate the scenes with new models from wardrobe, to hair and location. I will then pare the new photograph alongside the old and list as much historical information as possible. I will also then explain the new photograph and how my crew and I went about recreating the outfits, hair, lighting, locations, and more.
I hope that you’ll follow me, as I take on time, photography, and fashion with my friends, family, and crew in this wonderful journey.
